Description

Agilent 7890A GC with ECD Overview

The Agilent 7890A Gas Chromatograph (GC) equipped with a Split/Splitless (SSL) inlet and G2397A Micro-Electron Capture Detector (ECD) is built for sensitive, trace-level detection of halogenated and other electron-absorbing compounds. The 7890A’s 5th-generation Electronic Pneumatics Control (EPC) holds pressure setpoints to within 0.001 psi, supporting precise, reproducible retention times run after run.

The G2397A Micro-ECD uses a 15 mCi Nickel-63 radioactive source to generate a steady stream of electrons, which are selectively captured by electronegative compounds passing through the detector cell — making it exceptionally sensitive to halogenated pesticides, PCBs, and other electron-capturing analytes at femtogram-level detection limits. Its small detection zone volume and replaceable liner design help minimize column contamination and maintain long-term detector performance.

This Agilent 7890A GC with ECD is offered fully refurbished and tested, in working condition, by Alliant Scientific.

  • Agilent 7890A GC
    • Split/Splitless (SSL) Inlet
    • G2397A Micro-Electron Capture Detector (ECD)

Femtogram-level detection of halogenated pesticides, PCBs, and other electron-capturing compounds.
  • Small Detection Zone Volume
Minimizes peak broadening and improves sensitivity compared to larger-volume ECD designs.
  • Replaceable Liner Design
Reduces column contamination of the detector cell and simplifies maintenance.
  • Precise Electronic Pneumatics Control
5th-generation EPC delivers 0.001 psi pressure setpoint precision.
  • Fast Inlet Maintenance
Turn-Top SSL inlet design allows liner changes in under 30 seconds.

Applications

  • Pesticide Residue Analysis
Trace-level detection of organochlorine and other halogenated pesticides.
  • Environmental Testing
Detection of PCBs and other electron-capturing environmental contaminants.
  • Food Safety Testing
Screening for halogenated pesticide residues in food matrices.
  • Regulatory Compliance Testing
EPA-method compatible for halogenated compound analysis.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

What EPA methods is this GC-ECD configuration used for?

EPA Method 8081 (organochlorine pesticides) and EPA Method 8082 (PCBs) are the standard compliance methods run on GC-ECD systems like this one.

How sensitive is ECD detection?

Typical ECD response is around 1 pg on-column, sensitive enough to meet the low reporting limits required for EPA 8081 target pesticides.

Does a positive ECD result confirm a specific compound?

Not on its own. ECD identifies compounds by retention time match, not molecular structure, so EPA guidance requires confirming any positive result on a second column with a different stationary phase, or by GC/MS, before reporting.

Does this system include an autosampler?

No — this configuration is manual injection only. See our 7683 or 7693 Autosampler configurations if automated injection is needed.

Does this unit include a warranty?

Yes — this unit ships with a 90-day warranty.
