Agilent 7890A GC Refinery Gas Analyzer (RGA) with FID/TCD Overview
This system is configured as a complete refinery gas analyzer (RGA), combining simultaneous FID and TCD detection to analyze both hydrocarbons and permanent gases in a single run. Refinery gas streams — fuel gas, FCC overhead, atmospheric overhead, and recycle gases — contain complex mixtures of hydrocarbons, permanent gases, and sometimes sulfur compounds, requiring multi-channel detection to fully characterize.
The FID channel handles light hydrocarbon analysis, while the TCD channel detects permanent gases such as H2, O2, N2, CO, and CO2 that FID cannot see. A dual heated zone valve box houses four gas-sampling valves with pneumatic actuators (4-port, 6-port x2, 10-port), routing sample and carrier gas through different flow paths for backflushing and column switching. Two flow controller valves and an Aux EPC channel provide precise gas flow control beyond the standard inlet and detector EPC, and a VICI heater controller manages valve box temperature to prevent sample condensation.
This configuration is suitable for most refinery gas streams and supports plumbing customization to match specific method requirements (ASTM D1945, D1946, or similar).
