Description

Agilent 7890 GC-FID System Overview

Agilent 7890 GC-FID System

The Agilent 7890 GC-FID pairs Agilent’s 5th-generation Electronic Pneumatics Control (EPC) with a Flame Ionization Detector (FID), one of the most widely used detectors in Gas Chromatography for its sensitivity to virtually all organic compounds. The 7890’s digital pneumatics hold pressure setpoints to within 0.001 psi, supporting precise, reproducible retention times across runs.

The FID works by burning column effluent in a hydrogen/air flame and measuring the resulting ion current — a simple, rugged detection method well suited for hydrocarbon analysis, solvent testing, and general organic compound quantification where mass spec-level identification isn’t required.

The included split/splitless (SSL) inlet uses Agilent’s Turn-Top design, allowing liner changes in under 30 seconds without tools, keeping routine maintenance quick between sample runs.

This Agilent 7890 GC-FID System is offered fully refurbished and tested, in working condition, by Alliant Scientific.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

What is a Flame Ionization Detector (FID) used for?

An FID detects virtually all organic compounds by measuring ion current produced when the sample burns in a hydrogen/air flame — commonly used for hydrocarbon and solvent analysis.

What inlet does this GC-FID system include?

A split/splitless (SSL) inlet with Agilent’s Turn-Top design, allowing liner changes in under 30 seconds without special tools.

Is this system compatible with an autosampler?

Yes — it’s compatible with Agilent 7683 or 7693 autosamplers, available separately.

How does FID differ from mass spec (MS) detection?

FID detects and quantifies organic compounds without identifying their specific molecular structure, while mass spec detection (like a 5975C MSD) provides compound identification. FID is simpler and more rugged; MS is needed for unknown compound identification.

Does this unit include a warranty?

Yes — this unit ships with a 90-day warranty.
