“Refurbished”: A Term Redefined by Accountability

In the pre-owned laboratory equipment industry, few terms are as ambiguously applied as “refurbished” and “excellent.” These labels are frequently co-opted to imply rigorous restoration, even when instruments undergo no substantive servicing or component replacement. Vendors may deploy such terminology as marketing tactics, capitalizing on buyer assumptions of quality—yet when pressed for specifics, they often fail to substantiate claims with tangible evidence. All too often, “refurbished” is reduced to a superficial descriptor for equipment that merely powers on and appears functional.

  • Detailed accounts of all cleaning, decontamination, maintenance and repairs performed
  • A complete list of replaced consumable components
  • Test reports
